14-year-old boy found dead after swimming in Silver Creek, New Albany police say | News from WDRB

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A 14-year-old boy was found dead after he went swimming Monday in Silver Creek, according to police.

Andre Edwards Jr. was swimming in Silver Creek near Providence Way when he went underwater around 4 p.m. and didn’t resurface. New Albany and Clarksville fire and police departments responded to the scene, according to New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey.

There was an active search for the teenager at the creek in southern Indiana for several hours.

Police said Edwards decided to jump off the dam when an undertow grabbed him and trapped him under the water, according to police.

First responders suspended the search on Silver Creek due to darkness around 9:30 p.m. Monday. The search was planned to restart on Tuesday morning, Bailey said, but Edwards was found in Silver Creek in the area of Providence Way near the initial search area.

“Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, we will not speculate on a cause of death,” Bailey said. “The New Albany Police Department Criminal Investigations Office continues to investigate this matter.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call New Albany Police’s Criminal Investigations Division or Police Communications at 812-944-6411.
