Nonprofit hosts health fair in Silver Spring neighborhood

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — On Friday, neighbors in the Spring Parc community had the opportunity to participate in health screenings and receive free food as part of the Kingdom Cares Mini Community Health Fair.

Kingdom Cares makes it their mission to support members of the community, especially those who are often underserved. They make meaningful connections and provide free resources to neighbors in the areas where they live.

“Health is one of those big resources that lack in our Black and Brown communities,” Karima Davis-Valentine, Kingdom Cares’ community outreach program manager, said. “They go underserved, unnoticed. So, we believe in bringing it to them where they can just walk out of their apartment or come down the street. Grab themselves some food and get the screenings.”

The health screenings include ones to check blood glucose and people’s vision.

“We are here for them,” Mayur Mody, executive director of the American Diversity Group, said. “Providing them with free medical care, no matter if you have insurance or no insurance, whether you have documents or no documents, whether you’re an immigrant, a refugee or whatever status you are.”

William Croom has his eyesight and blood pressure checked regularly. He said as a senior, it’s crucial that he keeps up with his health.

“Sometimes when you don’t get a chance to go to the doctor and sometimes in between visits, you might develop a problem of some kind,” Croom said. “Montgomery County is very beneficial for putting this on for seniors so they would know their health status almost all of the time. You don’t want any surprises.”

Kingdom Cares uses these events to provide free healthcare services, as well as to fight food insecurity.
