Pissott Wins Gold Medal, As USA Holds Off Canada, 82-77
Tennessee freshman Justine Pissott earned her first international gold medal Sunday night, as the USA finished unbeaten at the 2022 FIBA U18 Women’s Americas Championship at Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
USA held off Canada, 82-77, to finish the tournament 6-0 and win gold for the 10th straight time at the FIBA U18 Women’s Americas Championships and notch its 11th gold medal since the event’s inception in 1988.
After winning a hard-fought opening quarter, 20-16, USA pushed ahead by 10 points at the half by claiming the second frame, 21-15, to claim a 41-31 lead. Canada cut the deficit to four by taking the third frame, 22-16, before the USA won the final stanza, 25-24, to secure the medal.
Pissott, a 6-foot-4 wing from Toms River, N.J., saw seven minutes of duty during the highly-competitive affair, contributing a rebound and assist while going 0-for-2 from the field, including 0-for-1 beyond the three-point arc.
For the tournament, Pissott averaged 15.3 minutes per game, contributing 6.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists off the bench in six contests. She scored in double figures twice, firing in 13 vs. Puerto Rico in Group play and knocking down four treys to net 12 points vs. Brazil in the semifinal round.
A five-star recruit from Red Bank Catholic High School, Pissott was ranked No. 11 overall and the No. 2 wing in the class of 2022 espnW 100, was named an All-American by both McDonald’s and the WBCA, and she was a participant in the Jordan Brand Classic.
