Sudanese minister accuses RSF of looting gold and silver

February 20, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s Minister of Minerals, Mohamed Bashir Abu Nammu, has made serious accusations against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), claiming they looted 15 tons of silver and 1,273 kilograms of gold from the Sudan Gold Refinery in April 2023.

This alleged looting occurred shortly following the outbreak of war on April 15, 2023, when the RSF took control of the gold refinery and several strategic sites the paramilitary forces were responsible for guarding.

In an interview with the Al-Muhaqqiq website, Abu Nammu stated that the RSF seized the precious metals, including 5 tons ready for export. He further clarified that the gold had been officially documented just days before the war, with specific quantities allocated to the Bank of Sudan, the Ministry of Finance, the refinery, private companies, and a government strategic portfolio.

Sudan officially produced 23.2 tons of gold in 2023, with 12.9 tons exported. However, press reports suggest that the actual production is significantly higher due to widespread artisanal mining and smuggling activities.

The Minister also highlighted the detrimental impact of the conflict on the mining sector, with numerous companies suspending operations across the country. This includes companies involved in gold mining in Darfur and Kordofan, chromium mining in the Blue Nile Region, and exploration and mining ventures across various sectors.

While acknowledging efforts to revive these companies, Abu Nammu emphasized the ongoing challenges, including continued uncontrolled mining activities in Darfur and some Kordofan markets. He also clarified that the RSF currently does not control any active gold-producing areas.
