Fort Wayne cooling stations to open next week, city shares

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – Leaders with the City of Fort Wayne’s Office of Housing and Neighborhood Services have laid out plans to offer cooling stations as high temperatures are expected to hit the city starting on Sunday.

21Alive First Alert Meteorologists have issued several First Alert Weather Days for next week as multiple days are expected to reach a heat index over 100°. During those days, you should plan to limit time outdoors, especially for those more susceptible to the heat.

Starting Sunday, June 16, anyone (men, women, and families) can visit the following cooling stations for a break from the heat:

  • The Rescue Mission, 404 E. Washington Blvd.
    • Open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. regardless of temperature. The shelter also serves meals at 7 a.m., noon, and 5 p.m.
  • The Salvation Army, 2901 N. Clinton St.
  • The Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun St.
    • Open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon-4 p.m.
  • Inasmuch Ministry, 930 Broadway
    • Open Mondays from 4 – 7 p.m.

The above locations will serve as cooling stations next week and any other day when the temperature reaches 90 degrees or higher, the office says.

Meanwhile, the City says the Office of Housing and Neighborhood Services and the Planning Council on Homelessness will continue to look for other community partners to offer cooling shelters in the evenings.

Any updates to the summer weather plan and cooling stations will be posted online here and on the Everyone Home website.
