New Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes film gives big boost to Australian economy

This week’s release of the new Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes blockbuster has proved to be an asset for the Australian economy.

Filmed at Disney Studios Australia in Sydney from late 2022, the film – the fourth in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise – employed more than 1,000 cast, crew and extras and injected $135 million dollars into the local economy, the local Disney team told Mumbrella this week.

The production also utilised the services of more than 700 vendors and local businesses.

“We’re thrilled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was filmed on location at our Disney Studios Australia in Sydney, part of The Walt Disney Company’s significant local footprint here,” Walt Disney Company Australia and New Zealand senior vice president and managing director, Kylie Watson-Wheeler, told Mumbrella.

“The production provided a meaningful boost to our screen and creative sector through employment, skills development, and use of local businesses.

“We acknowledge and thank the Australian and NSW governments for their continued support in ensuring film productions of this calibre and scale can be shot at the world-class Disney Studios Australia facility, leveraging the strength of our extraordinary local creative industry.”

Out in cinemas across Australia now, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is directed by Wes Ball and stars Owen Teague Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy.

Meanwhile on a new episode of Mumbrella’s one-on-one podcast series, Universal Pictures ANZ director of marketing, Suzanne Stretton-Brown, spoke about the state of the cinema industry in 2024.
