Horst Insurance acquires Manheim brokerage firm

Lancaster-based Horst Insurance has acquired Ruhl Insurance, an insurance brokerage firm based in Manheim. 

The deal was finalized March 1, according to Horst, an independent insurance broker focused in southcentral and southeastern Pennsylvania. 

Formed by Jacob H. Ruhl in 1943, Ruhl Insurance grew to manage the insurance needs of more than 1,800 personal, commercial, farm, and agri-business clients. Nevin Dourte acted as president until his unexpected death in August 2023. 

 “After careful consideration of the best options to continue our mission while expanding our resources and capabilities, we decided to partner with Horst,” said Megan Dourte Shumaker, former president of Ruhl Insurance. “Horst shares our passion for excellence, has significant local roots, and can provide the support we need so our team can continue to care for our clients.”  

Headquartered in Lancaster with a branch in Chadds Ford, Horst Insurance provides insurance has more than 7,000 family and business clients. 

 “The cultural similarities between Horst and Ruhl are undeniable,” said Dave King, president of Horst Insurance. “Horst’s desire to expand Ruhl’s farm and agri-business opportunities made it the perfect fit.” 

Horst Insurance has acquired 10 firms since 1989, expanding its geographic footprint throughout central and eastern Pennsylvania and 45 other states.
