Adif announces 169 million euros in investment

Adif has announced an investment of 169 million euros this week, distributed among four projects. The railway infrastructure manager will allocate 84 million euros to comprehensively renew the railway between Buñol and Utiel, 15 million euros to address four level crossings in Mieres, 23 million euros for the maintenance of traffic control facilities on the Madrid-Valladolid High-Speed Rail Line, and 47 million euros for the supply and profiling of rails for both conventional and narrow-gauge networks.

Adif is poised to make a substantial investment of 84 million euros in a comprehensive renewal project for the railway section between Buñol and Utiel. This initiative, approved on February 1, 2024, is a significant step in bolstering the Cercanías Plan of the Valencian Community, specifically targeting the C3 line of Cercanías de València. The project encompasses the installation of new track superstructure elements, platform adaptations for stations, and adjustments to tunnel sections, all aimed at future electrification. This investment aims to enhance the reliability of the network, improve overall railway service operations, and contribute to increased regularity and speed of traffic.

The intervention will cover a stretch of 45.6 kilometres, involving the complete renewal of the main track and sidings at Utiel and El Rebollar. Key aspects include standardising track elements, such as rails and sleepers, drainage and ditch cleaning, protection against landslides, and consolidation measures like the installation of triple-twist meshes, cable networks, and bolting. Moreover, the dimensions of platforms at various stations, including Utiel, El Rebollar, San Antonio de Requena, Requena, Siete Aguas, and Venta Mina, will be adjusted to align with the new track layout. The project also includes the adaptation of 13 tunnels in anticipation of future electrification and civil engineering work on 10 bridges and 22 overpasses.

15 million for the Mieres level crossing

Adif has allocated a substantial investment of nearly 15 million euros to address challenges posed by four level crossings in Mieres, situated on the Trubia-Collanzo narrow-gauge railway line. This initiative, part of the Asturias Commuter Plan, is set to significantly enhance the permeability of the municipality while concurrently improving safety conditions for road, pedestrian, and rail traffic. The strategic investment, approved on February 1, 2024, reflects Adif’s commitment to modernising transportation infrastructure.

Two of the targeted level crossings, positioned at pp.kk. 13/372 and 14/015 along the Trubia-Collanzo line, will undergo elimination with a budget exceeding 10.6 million euros. The proposed solutions include the construction of road overpasses and parallel roads, facilitating seamless connectivity on both sides of the track. A new roundabout will be integrated at the first crossing, facilitating road connections and providing access to the Hunosa water treatment plant and landfill. Simultaneously, at the pp.k. 14/015 crossing, a pedestrian walkway with stairs will be constructed, meeting the request of the Pumardongo Residents’ Association and ensuring safe passage across the track.

Additionally, Adif will invest over 4.2 million euros to remove two level crossings located at the Ablaña station, servicing the Asturias Commuter lines C1 Gijón/Oviedo-Puente de los Fierros and C8 Baiña-Collanzo on the narrow-gauge network. The plan involves constructing two pedestrian-accessible roads within the station premises, connecting to the MI-1 road overpass that spans the station. A primary road will link houses on the east side with the overpass, while a secondary road will connect houses on the west side to the main road. The project also includes the renewal of the existing overpass, equipped with a new containment system, and the addition of a pedestrian walkway with stairs for enhanced accessibility.

23 million for the Madrid-Valladolid High-Speed Rail Line

Adif has earmarked over 23 million euros for the maintenance of traffic control facilities on the Madrid-Valladolid High-Speed Rail Line. Within the High-Speed Rail category, and focusing specifically on the Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid line, Adif is set to channel these funds towards enhancing the maintenance of traffic control facilities and complementary systems for the period 2024-2028. The investment was approved on February 1, 2024.

The comprehensive scope of contracted works encompasses the maintenance of various facilities, spanning interlockings, track circuits, switch actuators, switch position indicators, lateral signalling, ASFA, Centralised Traffic Control (CTC), ERTMS N1, ERTMS N2, power systems, and detectors. These essential activities are integral to fortifying railway operations on the high-speed line, with a keen focus on preserving optimal circulation conditions, ensuring the reliability of installations, and enhancing the overall comfort of passengers.

Executing these maintenance endeavours will be a collaborative effort, with activities slated to be carried out from maintenance centres strategically located in Madrid Chamartín, Soto del Real (Madrid), Segovia, Olmedo (Valladolid), and Valladolid. The joint venture formed by GTS Transportation Spain and Sistemas y Montajes Industriales will be responsible for the execution of the works.

47 million euros for the supply and profiling of rails

Adif is making a significant investment of more than 47 million euros in the supply and profiling of rails, targeting both conventional and narrow-gauge networks. Within the Conventional Rail and Narrow-Gauge Rail categories, this initiative, approved on January 31, 2024, underscores Adif’s commitment to advancing, improving, and maintaining both networks by extending the lifespan of critical rail infrastructure.

The lion’s share of this investment, amounting to 40.2 million euros, is allocated to a framework agreement for the supply and transportation of rail, entrusted to two companies, JSW Steel Italy Piombino and Arcelormittal España.
