U.S. HUD announces $3.17 billion investment in public housing
(WHTM) — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded more than $3 billion in Public Housing Repair funding to thousands of public housing authorities across the country.
According to HUD, they have awarded $3.17 billion in Public Housing Repair funding to 2,756 public housing authorities across all 50 states, including the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
“At HUD, our mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality homes for all,” said HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman. “Today’s grant funding is a necessary investment that will not only ensure that the homes offered in public housing fit the needs of its residents, but it will also strengthen neighborhoods for generations to come.”
Of the more than $3 billion, the state of Pennsylvania was awarded $192,241,437. Housing Authorities across the Midstate were awarded over $15 million, including:
- The Housing Authority of the City of Lancaster $1,560,066
- Housing Authority of the City of York $2,990,745
- Housing Authority of the County of Franklin $1,194,338
- Housing Authority of the County of Dauphin $1,985,911
- Harrisburg Housing Authority $5,345,513
- Housing Authority of the County of Lebanon $1,320,216
- The Housing Authority of the County of Mifflin $846,347
- Housing Authority of the County of Cumberland $586,529
“As we contemplate the lasting imprint of federal investment in public housing, we acknowledge its profound influence on communities across the nation,” HUD Regional Administrator Matthew Heckles added. “Today signifies yet another milestone in our joint endeavor to guarantee secure, eco-friendly, and respectable housing for every American.”
HUD says that the grants announced today were provided through the HUD’s Capital Fund Program, which offers annual funding to housing authorities to build, renovate, and/or modernize the public housing in their perspective communities.
Housing Authorities are able to use this funding to complete large-scale improvements such as replacing roofs or making energy-efficient upgrades to heating systems and installing water conservation measures.
