Proposed New York Yankees Trade Sends Spencer Jones for Left-Handed Ace

With Gerrit Cole dealing with an injury, the New York Yankees could make a move for another starting pitcher. Even when their ace returns, another high-end arm is never a bad thing for a team of the Yankees’ caliber.

A proposed trade by Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report sends New York Jesus Luzardo, the Miami Marlins ace.

While adding Luzardo would make the Yankees a better team, the deal he proposes shouldn’t be one the front office thinks about offering.

In the proposed trade, New York would send Spencer Jones, Roderick Arias, and Everson Pereira.

Moving Jones for Luzardo wouldn’t make much sense, especially after it was reported that the Yankees wouldn’t trade him for Dylan Cease. If the Yankees wouldn’t move their star prospect for Cease, who has two years of club control, they likely wouldn’t trade him for a pitcher worse than Cease who has an injury history.

Jones had an impressive Spring Training, slashing .444/.583/.722 with one home run, two doubles, and five walks in 13 games played.

The left-handed slugger is regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball, and someone who’s expected to be a big part of New York’s future.

Luzardo, 26 years old, showed promising signs in 2023, throwing the most innings of his career (178 2/3) and posting a 3.58 ERA.

However, he has only thrown over 100 1/3 innings once in his six-year big league career, a massive concern about his ability to stay on the field.

Trading for him this season could benefit the Yankees, but not if it’s going to require trading Jones.
