Red Sox trade John Schreiber to Royals for David Sandlin
The Red Sox are trading a reliever, but it’s not the one who’s been heavily involved in trade rumors in recent weeks.
John Schreiber is being traded from the Red Sox to the Royals, the team announced Saturday. In return, the Red Sox will receive minor-league pitcher David Sandlin.
Schreiber was one of Boston’s most-used arms out of the bullpen over the last couple of seasons. The righty, who turns 30 on March 5, had a breakout season in 2022, going 4-4 with a 2.22 ERA in 65 innings pitched over 64 appearances. He posted 74 strikeouts to just 19 walks with a 0.985 WHIP.
The 2023 season wasn’t as kind to Schreiber. After posting strong numbers in the first month and a half of the season, Schreiber suffered a teres major sprain that sidelined him over two months. His numbers fell upon his return in late July, posting a 4.85 ERA with a 1.146 WHIP over 28 appearances after his 60-day stint on the injured list. He finished the year with 2-1 record and a 3.86 ERA in 46 2/3 innings pitched over 46 appearances.
The Red Sox’ decision to trade Schreiber comes as the first week of spring training closes. It also comes in the midst of rumors that the team could trade closer Kenley Jansen. It’s been reported that Boston could be open to moving the All-Star closer as a means to shed salary as he’s set to earn $16 million in 2024.
It was also reported by MassLive.com’s Christopher Smith and Sean McAdam that the Red Sox were open to moving other relievers, such as Chris Martin, who is set to count for $8.75 million toward the CBT payroll.
The Red Sox didn’t clear much salary though by trading Schreiber. He’s set to make $1.175 million this season. Unlike Jansen and Martin, Schreiber is also under team control through the end of the 2026 season.
Sandlin, 23, gives the Red Sox another prospect who’s been used as a starting pitcher in the minors. The 2022 11th-round pick spent all of last season in Single-A, going 4-1 with a 3.38 ERA, 79 strikeouts, 13 walks, and 57 hits in 58 2/3 innings over 12 starts last year. He was promoted to high-A ball later in the sesaon, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA over two starts.
Sandlin was recently ranked as the seventh-best propsect in the Royals’ system by The Athletic‘s Keith Law.
