Weber State University trading electronic W for solar-powered “Flaming W”
OGDEN, Utah — After nearly 50 years, Weber State University is swapping out its electric W for something a bit more “fiery.”
According to a WSU press release, the university has been using its electric W to celebrate its homecoming and other events for 45 years.
Construction on the “Flaming W,” a permanent solar-powered W, will begin this summer. The press release states the “Flaming W” will be made up of solar panels. These solar panels will light up purple and white.
“There have long been attempts to put a permanent W on the mountainside,” said WSU President Brad Mortensen in the press release. “The temporary one has been a source of pride for our Wildcats and the community, and the new one will only amplify that school spirit.”
The new W will serve as a more sustainable option, according to Mortensen.
“Not only are we modernizing a tradition at Weber,” he said. “But it’s also going to contribute electricity back to the grid.”
According to the press release, WSU has raised nearly enough to fund the “Flaming W.” It’s down to the last $500,000. Those interested in donating can do so here.
WSU hopes to have the project complete in time for its homecoming in October.
