The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday said that the ruling party has increased the prices of commodities through syndicates.

‘Those who steal votes can also control the market and business. The situation of the people of the ruling party is such that they have started extortion even on the streets. The effect of mass extortion from trucks carrying goods from different parts of the country is falling on the consumer,’ said BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

He was addressing the iftar party and reception programme for the victims of imprisonment in Cox’s Bazar town. BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman joined the programme virtually.

He said that thousands of crores of taka have been smuggled abroad by the people of ruling Awami League.

‘As the amount was drained out, the dollar rate rose. Then there is an impact on commodity prices. Because the entire syndicate is controlled by the people of the Awami League,’ he said, adding that unfortunately people are now expecting price control by them who are beneficiary of this price hike.

He said that the government as well as the AL have created different beneficiary groups to stay in power.

‘These groups are under the protection of the rulers. All of which put pressure on the people. As long as the unelected government remains in power, this misery and syndicate will continue to oppress the people. They should be ousted from power immediately,’ he added.

He also said that not only the opposition party, but the absence of 95 per cent of the people in the election is a big protest.

‘This is a proof that people do not want this government. The fact that 95 per cent of people responded to the boycott call is our [BNP] success,’ he added.

BNP’s Chattogram divisional organising secretary Mahbube Rahman Shamim, its central fishery affairs secretary Lutfar Rahman Kajal, executive committee member Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuz Ullah Farid and district BNP president Shahjahan Chowdhury were present at the programme.
